International Surfing Day – Sunday June 20, 2010

We are meeting at Jenness Beach around 1pm for a surf session and beach cleanup…just look for the NH Surfrider tent!

In the evening we have an informal mixer on the deck at the Portsmouth Gas Light Co. with information about NH Surfrider and the volunteer opportunities for various programs.

NH Surfrider is holding its third annual fundraiser party on May 7th at the Gas Light Co. in downtown Portsmouth. This year’s event will feature live music, an amazing raffle, surf movies, and much more. Download the Poster

“This is a great event and our premier fundraiser for the year,” says Jamie McCallum of NH Surfrider. “We’re looking forward to a huge crowd and a fun night!”

The event, which starts at 8:00 pm, will feature a DJ and live music from area band Kings Highway. The event will be held upstairs in the nightclub space (21+) at The Portsmouth Gas Light Co. Tickets are $10 and will be sold at the door.

Also, over one thousand dollars worth of gear, gift cards and other prizes will be handed out during the evening’s raffle event. This includes donations of surfboards, wetsuits, massage packages, ski passes, and much more from sponsors including local surf shops, ski resorts, massage therapists, and surfboard builders.

Proceeds from this year’s event will go to support NH Surfrider, the Molly Rowlee Foundation and the Linda Jo Fund. NH Surfrider is a local chapter of the non-profit grassroots organization dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of our world’s oceans, waves and beaches. The Molly Rowlee Foundation raises money for cancer research and the Linda Jo Fund raises money to support free surf lessons for underprivileged children.

“The surfing community is very generous and we’re delighted to include both of these causes in the evening,” explains McCallum. “A big thank you to all our sponsors and the Gas Light for supporting the event for a third year.”

Saturday April 3, 2010 – The Wall.
The first beach cleanup in the NH Surfrider ‘Summer Series’ saw a record 55 volunteers remove over 560 pounds of trash from North Beach, Hampton. Both record numbers for a NH Surfrider cleanup.

Emily and Sarah (pictured at the tent), members of NH Chapter of Surfrider Foundation, managed the cleanup all morning; signing in volunteers, supplying gloves and bags, and weighing the trash as it was removed from the beach.

The Summer Series is sponsored by Cinnamon Rainbows Surf Shop and Ocean Minded. Volunteers at any of the four Summer beach cleanups can enter the free raffle to win a surfboard donated by Cinnamon Rainbows. Seabrook Beach Cleanups Poster

Show up and help at any of the four cleanups to get your name in the surfboard raffle. Each time you register and help with the cleanups in April, June, July, and August, you get additional entries to the raffle.

The winner of the Cinnamon Rainbows Surfboard will be drawn in the raffle at the end of the August 7th cleanup, along with other winners for prizes from Ocean Minded and NH Surfrider.

2010 Cleanup Poster

Here’s our 2010 cleanup poster NH Surfrider 2010 beach cleanups poster
It lists the dates and times for all the beach cleanups in 2010 so please print it out, put it on the fridge, spread the word, and find the time to help look after your ocean, waves, and local beaches.

We’ve drawn up a long list of potential activities with various levels of involvement in four action areas:

- Awareness/Recruiting/Fundraising
- Education
- Water Quality Monitoring
- Beach Cleanup/Volunteer Programs

The meeting is on Thursday January 14 at the Blue Mermaid in Portsmouth. Starting at 6.30pm for a couple of hours.

With 150lbs of trash and 450lbs of rope and lobster traps, the cleanup signaled the change to heavier debris washed up by storms and stronger surf.

Despite the massive haul, there’s sure to be plenty of trash to collect by the time our January cleanup comes around.

Sunshine
In September, we started with our monthly beach cleanup at The Wall with 25 volunteers. Sunshine, kites flying and plenty of trash collected from the beach – a combination of Hurricane Bill and the Labor Day weekend.

Barefoot
 A week later, we shared a booth space (in the rain) at the Hampton Beach Seafood Festival with Barefoot Wine – a national Surfrider Foundation sponsor. The very next week we were back with Barefoot for the beach rescue event down at Hampton Beach. After the cleanup, lunch was on Barefoot Wine!

Fishtival
On the same day, a separate group of volunteers was under the NH Surfrider tent and talking to visitors at the Fishtival event in Portsmouth. We created a mock water quality testing program for the Prescott Park ‘coastline’ and showed visitors how we survey an area by zone, fill out the data sheets and collect water samples. We also provided information on Surfrider’s mission and how to get involved with the New Hampshire Chapter. Later in the afternoon, we did a ‘beach cleanup’ in the Park as part of International Coastal Cleanup.

Rain
 A change of weather for the October cleanup, and a smaller turnout of volunteers. It wasn’t as cold as it looks so we stayed on the beach for a long time and collected masses of small pieces of trash from among the rocks and blocks at The Wall.

Pizza
Flatbread Company in Portsmouth kindly hosted a benefit night for NH Surfrider on October 6. A special thank you to everyone who came along, and to all the local companies that donated prizes for the raffle. Funds go towards our water quality monitoring and educational program.
